iPhone shuts off and comes on at random

My brother’s iPhone 5s (16Gb, approx 2,5 years old) had a problem with it shutting off at random, after which it would boot after some time. When it would boot, it wouldn’t require the sim unlock, it would just be as if nothing happened. We diagnosed it to be the battery, since that seemed to be a common problem/solution we found on the internet. And after replacing the battery this morning the phone indeed worked like normal. But after using it for a bit it started showing similar behaviour again.

Does anybody have any experience with such behaviour?

Weak solder on one of the logic boards? Or screen problem, since it seems to be keeping enough power to think it doesn't need to be unlocked?

I recommend against anything apple myself, but kudos on attempting DIY repairs on one.

I didn’t find any obviously weak soldered parts when it was open. Also the fact that it boots showing the apple kinda rules out the screen problem, since it ‘knows’ it is rebooting.

The DIY repairs are quite doable actually, as long as you have a good guide, the needed tools and the patience. Also having the good diagnosis helps...

Same on my 5s. The lock button stopped working shortly thereafter, I tried a new screen that I had laying around, with a new home button...no dice. I found out that lock/home buttons are controlled by this tiny little resistor on the mainboard. I’m pretty good at soldering/de-soldering, but everything is way to small. I just got a new phone.

Yeah, I think it was on 9.3 something, we decided to update/restore it, so we will see if that solves it.

Sounds like an IC on the logic board. Did a quick google search and it seems some people have done some digging into it, but hes most likely better off sourcing a new phone.
